In the 1960's a Canadian anatomist by the name of Basmaijian observed that patients could control one muscle fibre in their thumb just by thinking about it. The patients could see their muscle fibre firing on a screen, and as they did they noted that that made it easier for them to control the muscle fibre. Biofeedback was born.
Simply put, biofeedback is 'feeding back' information to a person about what is happening in some part of their body. It could be information from the brain (EEG or neurofeedback); from the vascular system (e.g. blood pressure); from finger tip sweat (Galvanic Skin Response or GSR) or from muscle fibres (ElectroMyoGraphy - EMG).
It's useful because our minds are not always sensitive enough to know what is happening in our bodies, and magnifying that response through a detector of some kind gives us that information.
About 15 years ago the measurement of Heart Rate Variability (HRV) began to be researched. This is a measure of how much the heart varies in its rate from beat to beat. It happens to be not only a good measure of physical health but also mental health. The higher the HRV the better.
At the Heart Math Institute in California the research has deepened to involve how the heart itself has its own intrinsic nervous system and actually sends signals to the brain that can shut down or turn on messages that come back to the rest of the body.
The connection between the heart and the brain can now be measured by special equations that look at heart rate variability and feed back this information to the person wearing the detector. This pattern has now been shown to vary with different emotional states.
The diagram below shows how different patterns look - in this case frustration versus appreciation. Note it is not just the heart rate but how the rate varies from one beat to the next.

Watch your heart rhythms in real time, see how emotions affect them and discover which emotions you can activate to effectively manage stress and boost vitality. HeartMath’s 16 years of research has shown emotions are reflected in our heart-rhythm patterns. Learn how to intentionally shift to a positive emotional state and see how shifts in your heart rhythms create physiological responses. Stress will diminish and feelings of well-being and energy will increase.
The emWave PC Stress Relief system is a software and hardware program that collects pulse data through a fingertip or ear sensor, plugs into your computer and translates the information from your heart rhythms into user-friendly graphics displayed on your monitor.

HOW EMOTIONS WORK WITH OUR NEURO-HORMONES
Emotions can be positive (left half of circle) or negative (right half of circle). Both positive and negative emotions can be high or low energy depending on the balance of neurohormones in our system. e.g. excitement and anxiety are quite similar, as are anger and passion. The HeartMath system helps you to get your heart and brain synchronized into a coherent pattern so you can be on the left hand side of the circle more of the time in your life.
